SUN YAT-SEN MEMORIAL

At the foot of Yuexiu Shan Hill (at the top of which is a monument to the doctor's memory accessible by a stone staircase), this auditorium was built on the site of the governor of the provinces of Guangdong and the Guangxi under the Qing, then occupied by Sun Yat-Sen when he became first President of the Republic in 1912. The hall was built thanks to the numerous gifts of overseas Chinese and citizens of the city a few years after the death of the father of the Chinese Republic. The work of this magnificent building in the style of the renewal of the imperial Chinese architecture began in January 1929 and was completed in November 1931. Lu Yanzhi, the brilliant architect of the project, also planned the plans of the Sun Yat-Sen Mausoleum in Nanjing. Unfortunately, he died before the end of the work in 1929 at the age of 35.
