At 1 900 metres above sea level, Dali is located on the shores of Lake Erhai, at the foot of the Cangshan Mountains, which peak at 4 000 metres. The region enjoys a subtropical temperate climate. Dali stayed the bay of Bai populations, and the famous Three Pagodas, 1 kilometers farther north, testified to their glorious past. It is a «Millennium China» that seems to be fixed in the past, and the few surrounding hamlets seem to be coming out of the Middle Ages. Between the city and the lake extends the rice fields where you always plough with buffalo and where ducks and geese they in ponds. The city itself, well picked up inside its walls (which still surrounds it on three sides), is easily on foot. Like all the old fortified cities, Dali is divided by streets that cut off right angles, the main ones are the Fuxing Lu (which goes from the south door to the north door) and the Huguo Lu (the street des cafés). It takes just a half hour to go from the south door to the north door on foot. There are virtually no modern buildings, only old old houses with small windows and wooden galleries covered on the first floor (with a Tibetan air wave shooter of Russian isba) or blanchi peaks with a black and white motif painted on the couille under the Chinese-style roof. In the southern part, towards the rice fields, some old master houses are grouped around a square courtyard and locked behind high protective protective walls of a portal (on the Xinmin Lu). Everywhere in the city we hear bells from bells from small horses who trottinent by pulling large loads or carts into tourist seats. Tillers carrying choux in their trailer and spitting discolouration smoke are constantly on the small streets, even in downtown areas. The crystalline and pure air of these mountains would be so wonderful, without this…Dali is populated by about ethnic minorities. Besides the Bai, which is the most provided community, there are also Yi, Hui, Lisu, Naxi and Tibetans. On the streets, we still see many old women in traditional, blue and black dai costumes, but also young Yi dressed in white, pink and red, women with a tired face taken from the surrounding mountains with superb red and green blouses, embroidered and tight in multiple cloth belts holding small superimposed tabliers on their trousers. On the back they wear either a bamboo hood or their toddler in beautiful, highly crafted baby carriers.First Bai settled in the Erhai lake regions 3 000 years ago. Dali's current small town was once the capital of the powerful kingdom of Nanzhao, founded in the th century. It was followed by Dali's kingdom, which lasted from 938 to 1254. With the decline of the song dynasty of the North and the South (960-1279), barbarian hordes composed of Tartars and Mongols converge on China. Genghis Khan went to Beijing in 1215. The Mongols conquered the North in 1234, then invaded South China and Yunnan, the last Refuges sanctuaries. They also imposed their "in Tibet. In 1279, Genghis Khan's grandson, Kubilay Khan, founded the Yuan dynasty (1279-1368) and became capital Beijing. This is also the time of Marco Polo's travel to China (1271-1295). The Dali kingdom, defeated by the progress of the Mongols, erupted in a multitude of small ethnic groups. These "national minorities", as they are called today, were particularly brimées during the Cultural Revolution in the 1960 s. Tourism development today poses the question of the preservation of these ancestral cultures, but largely threatened.
