A UNESCO World heritage site in 1997, Pingyao is one of the few intact fortified cities in China. The current city, built in 1370, the date of the Ming Dynasty. The historic city covers an area of 2 km ² and its town planning was designed to imitate a turtle, a symbol of longevity. Thus the south door represents the head of the tortoise, its two wells against the door materialise its eyes. The other five doors symbolize the legs and tail of the animal. Within the city, the four main main streets, eight secondary streets and the 72 lanes represent the carapace drawings. They support 72 watchtower and 3 000 slots, the symbolism of which is not trivial: Wise Confucius had 72 disciples and 3 000 pupils. From the th century until the beginning of the century, Pingyao was an important trading town, which is reflected in the early development of its banking system. His first foreign exchange house dates back to the th century.Today, the city represents for travellers a very pleasant stop to the discovery of China's millennium history and the traditions of this region of North China.
