With its 70,000 inhabitants, Quartu Sant'Elena is the third largest city in Sardinia. Situated on the Gulf of Cagliari, on the other side of the Molentargius ponds, it was just a village until the 1960s, earning its living from agriculture, crafts and salt mining. Today it is considered the residential suburb of Cagliari. Its first inhabitants in the Nuraghic period occupied the small hills of the coast. Phoenicians and Romans also appreciated its privileged location. The urban structure of Quartu dates back to the Middle Ages, but it was not considered a town in its own right until 1956.
