Not so long ago, Stintino was just a peaceful fishing village some twenty kilometers from Porto Torres. Its privileged position on the Gulf of Asinara and its splendid beaches were soon spotted by tourists. Hotel complexes sprang up everywhere, boosting the population from 1,000 in winter to almost 20,000 in summer! Many of the year-round residents are descendants of the 45 families who founded the village in 1885, following their exile from the island of Asinara, which was destined to house a penitentiary. With the hordes of tourists concentrating on the hotels outside, the beaches and especially the Pelosa beach, the old village remains very charming, with its typical narrow streets, boutiques and small marina.
