To the west of La Maddalena, the island of Spargi is renowned for the beautiful beaches of its eastern coast. All organised tours stop at the emerald waters of Cala Corsara, which takes its name from the Corsican pirates who found refuge there. The granite rocks have been sculpted by the winds into evocative shapes: bulldog, witch's head... North of Spargi, the two small islands of Spargiotto and Spargiottello are forbidden to boats and visitors. Several protected bird species such as the marangone, the Corsican gull and the storm bird, breed here. In 1939, the wreck of a Roman ship was discovered.
