Located 40 km east of Karratha, Roebourne was one of the first settlements occupied by the European colonies. Now a gold and copper mining town, many of its historic buildings have retained a certain cachet. Some are home to Aboriginal art galleries, including the Ganalili Centre, where you can learn about the history and culture of the Yindjibardni nation. In the 1930s, several of the region's Aboriginal tribes (Yindjibarndi, Bunjima, Gurrama and Marduthunia) were relocated to a reserve at Roebourne. As a result, the aboriginal community in this town of 1,000 inhabitants is now very large.
