Dampier is the departure point for the islands of the archipelago of the same name (42 in all) and is also a major industrial port for the Pilbara. The town owes its name to the English explorer William Dampier, who landed here in 1688. You'll probably want to visit Murujuga National Park (Burrup Peninsula) or take a boat out to the islands of the archipelago, or to the Montebello Islands. These maritime excursions are an opportunity to enjoy the area's biodiversity, with its turtles, dolphins and whales between July and September. Sea fishing is also very popular in the area.
