Karratha, the Pilbara's central town, is home to 17,000 inhabitants. Its name means "good country" in the local Aboriginal language. The town is primarily known for its mining activities, and its population fluctuates according to the activities of this industry, which contributes greatly to the wealth of the whole of Australia. Karratha can be a great base from which to explore the surrounding area. The tourist office on De Witt Road, open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 2pm, can provide information on the main attractions: the Burrup Peninsula (Murujuga National Park), the Dampier Archipelago and Millstream-Chichester National Park.
