Petit Futé's opinion on HMAS SYDNEY MEMORIAL

Do not miss during your visit to Geraldton. Magnificent outdoor memorial overlooking the city and the ocean. Place commemorating the 645 Australian sailors missing aboard the Sydney II warship during World War II on November 19, 1941. This is the greatest tragedy in naval history. It was during a return to the port that the Australians met the Kormoran, an unknown German ship. Falling into a trap, the ship flows without leaving traces. It was recently in 2008 that the research was resumed and that the wreck was recovered. As for the German ship, it sank as well, but left 318 survivors out of 390 sailors. No one knows why no Australian survived! The names of all the disappeared at sea are engraved on the monument. Before, facing the sea is the statue of a woman that one imagines to expect her husband departed at sea. It is a very moving place of memory.
