The Pinnacles Desert is located about 20 kilometers south of Cervantes. It was only discovered in 1960, when a plane made a forced landing there. The pilot, unhurt, managed to overcome the labyrinth of mineral trees and find help. This late discovery, 2 km from the coast and less than 30 km from a village, illustrates well the difficulties to overcome to discover this immense state still practically empty of any population. On the way, the car bumps on a small road. Then, without transition, a lunar landscape extends to infinity. On a desert of blond and moving sand, thousands of pillars and needles of stone with multiple forms stand up, a real mineral forest covering 300 ha. These vertical formations, close to each other, appear strangely rigid, on a silky sand that wrinkles and rises gently under the caress of the wind. The evening light, passing from the softest pink to the deepest ochre, constantly transforms the aspect of the pillars. The desert of the Pinnacles has been used as a backdrop by fashion photographers from international magazines. The best time to visit the Pinnacles is at sunrise or sunset (and watch out for kangaroos on the road) to intensify the colors and add a little more magic to this remote place. Walk or drive around the site. There is no accommodation on site but Cervantes offers several options. Many organized tours of Perth.
