Esperance, population 14,000 and 480 km east of Albany, owes its name to a French ship that took shelter here during a major storm. This region is bordered by the Great Ocean Drive, a 40 km road that offers some of the most beautiful coastal scenery Australia has to offer. With its white sandy coves, crystal-clear waters and beautiful islands, it's a sublime place to see and a pleasure to explore by bike or on foot. Don't miss Twilight Cove, where surfing is famous, and Nine Mile Beach, where you can go snorkeling. These beaches stand in stark contrast to the industrial port, where cargo ships take turns to pick up lithium, iron ore and other products from the outback to the north.
