330 km from Perth, the small town of Pemberton lies in an impressive Karri forest, which can be compared to the redwoods of California. Some of these trees, over 60 m tall, are 300 or 400 years old. Their hardwood was harvested and exported to England, where it was used to make wooden sleepers for the London Underground. The forests are also home to Jarrah trees, renowned for their resistance to termites. Over-exploited, only 10% remain compared to pre-colonization populations. Nice forest walks, especially around Gloucester Tree. A good stopover on the way to the South Coast.
