Eighteen kilometers off the coast of Fremantle, this 11 km long island is a perfect one or two day trip from Perth. The island is now a popular resort for Perth residents who travel there with their own boats, and it's easy to see why. It is a beautiful place, with beautiful white sandy beaches, an interesting natural environment, including flowers, birds, and turquoise waters rich in marine life to discover: sea lions and seals playing at Cathedral Rocks, or the wonders of the seabed to see by snorkelling, for example at Parker Point, Little Simon Bay and Parakeet Bay. But all this does not beat the animal known as "the smiliest in the world", the quokka, known for its friendliness and its tendency to let itself be approached to take a selfie! It is the quokka that gave its name to the island: in 1696, Dutch explorers thought they had met rodents of the rat family(rotte). This was a unique experience: quokkas are now very rare in the wild. Apart from the 10,000 at Rottnest, there are about 1,000 at Bald Island off Albany and small populations in the forests between Perth and Albany.
