20 km southwest of Perth City. Founded in 1829, Fremantle is a lively, picturesque port at the mouth of the Swan River, easily accessible by train, bus or boat. Its large port remains Western Australia's main import-export hub. Apart from the industrial port, there's a very cosmopolitan, artistic atmosphere here, with lots of street art. The atmosphere is almost Mediterranean... It's pleasant to stroll around at weekends, visiting the famous market, the historic buildings or stopping off at the cafés on South Terrace (Cappuccino Strip). "Freo" is the colloquial name for the city.
