Perth, the capital of Western Australia (WA), is a very modern city where life is good, thanks to its beautiful beaches, green spaces, blue skies and thriving economy. Isolation is surely Perth's hallmark: the only city with over 100,000 inhabitants west of Adelaide, 2,700 km away, it is the capital of a state five times the size of France, but with a population of just 2.8 million. The Covid-19 crisis didn't help matters, with the border between WA and the rest of the country remaining closed for two years: almost a trial run towards the state's independence, about which the locals often speak mischievously. They'll proudly remind you that WA is the richest state in the country (thanks to its many mines), and that "Over East" Australians should be more grateful! With its 2.1 million inhabitants, Perth is WA's only major city, the2nd being Mandurah (95,000 inhabitants), which is more or less a suburb of Perth, then Bunbury. You won't regret spending a few days in Perth, which you can spend discovering the history of this corner of the world, which came so close to becoming French! The Perth Cultural Centre, close to the skyscrapers of the City, will teach you all about it, and also about the Noongyar people, who have lived in the region for at least 40,000 years. You can also take a stroll in King's Park, a vast expanse of greenery close to the city center, offering superb panoramic views of the Swan River. The magnificent beaches of the Indian Ocean, including Cottesloe and Scarborough, are perfect for swimming or sunbathing. Take advantage of the trendy restaurants and bars in Northbridge, Leederville or Subiaco: you'll be spoilt for choice! Fremantle, just to the south and an integral part of the Perth metropolitan area, is worth a visit for its historic buildings, market and waterfront. From Perth, you can spend a day or two on Rottnest Island, explore the stunning Pinnacles Desert or enjoy the vineyards and natural beauty of the Margaret River region.
