With a population of approximately 400,000, the city of Canberra is the seat of the Australian government. Halfway between Melbourne and Sydney, Canberra is a new and modern city, built in 1908. It is home to the Senate and the House of Representatives, as well as numerous government departments and embassies. It is also home to a large number of museums, most of which are free of charge, such as the National Gallery of Australia, the National Museum of Australia and the Australian War Memorial, as well as important institutions such as the University of Canberra, the Royal Military College, the Australian Institute of Sports and the National Library of Australia.
