Founded in 1861, the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) is Australia's oldest and most visited museum. Housed in two magnificent buildings - NGV International (this building) and NGV Australia (Ian Potter Centre) - the museum is home to a wide range of international and local artists, temporary exhibitions, programs and activities; from contemporary art to major historic international exhibitions, fashion and design, architecture, photography, sound and dance. In short, welcome to the temple of creativity! The NGV is home to over 76,000 works of art spanning thousands of years of artistic creation. Among the most famous contemporary works are Katsushika Hokusai's iconic The Great Wave of Kanagawa, Giambattista Tiepolo's Cleopatra's Banquet and Pablo Picasso's Weeping Woman. You'll mainly find collections of Asian, Australian and international art, as well as decorative art and Aboriginal art. There are even presentations and activities for children under 4. Admission is for one child and one adult. A ticket is required for each additional adult. You can also buy souvenirs featuring the artists, or books on contemporary art or the history of the artists featured.
