Most tourists stop in Mataranka, 110 km from Katherine and 7 km from the Stuart Highway, to enjoy the two hot springs in Elsey National Park, and they're right. Spending a little time here means you can enjoy some lovely walks and learn about the local history. Mataranka has also been famous since the publication of the Australian literary classic We of the Never Never , written by the first white woman to settle in the region, which describes the difficult living conditions on the cattle station of Elsey (a gigantic ranch) at the beginning of the 20th century. Visit the Never Never museum to learn more (open daily from 10am to 2pm).
