Opened in 1986, Litchfield is one of the Northern Territory's newest national parks. It features golden limestone escarpments, with spectacular waterfalls in the heart of the rainforest. Crystal-clear rock pools and pleasant hiking trails make this park a favorite excursion spot for Darwin locals (unfortunately, this can be seen on weekends). Litchfield is 130km south of Darwin, about 1h30 away. The Florence and Wangi waterfalls are a must-see! The climb to the top of Wangi Falls, through the rainforest, is our favorite. Buley Rockhole is a great family swim. Cascades requires a little more effort, but the environment and the swim are well worth it. Walker Creek combines walking and swimming in a calmer atmosphere. Admire Litchfield's biodiversity on the Greenant and Tollner walks, both of which offer magnificent views of waterfalls. Tabletop Swamp is a peaceful billabong surrounded by paperbark trees, home to many of Litchfield's 169 bird species. Those lucky enough to have a 4x4 can take a drive through the beautiful and tranquil Lost City. The more adventurous will descend the Reynolds River track (only during the dry season, check road conditions) in the south of the park and be graced by magnificent fields of "magnetic" termite mounds, idyllic streams and the waterfalls of Surprise Creek.
