80 km southwest of Cairns, Atherton is the capital of the Tablelands. It's a small town with a population of 11,600, which has grown rapidly over the years. Near Tolga, the discovery of handicrafts and woodcarving is well worth the detour. It's also the perfect place for birdwatching on the Hasties Swamp and the Wongabel Botanical Walk. And don't miss the climb to the very top of Halloran Hill, situated atop a dormant volcano. The panorama is breathtaking and you'll marvel at the most spectacular view of the Atherton Plateau, falling over farmland to Lake Tinaroo.
