Just 4 km off Mission Beach, the small island of Dunk Island is part of Family Island National Park. Its wildlife inspired writer E. J. Banfield, who lived on the island from 1897 to 1923 and described it in his novel The Confessions of a Beachcomber. The site dunkislandcamp.com.au is a comprehensive guide to planning your visit. The QuickCoast ferry takes you from Clump Point in 15 minutes for AU$75 return (quickcoast.com.au). You can go there for the day, and if you want to spend the night, there's a public campsite run by the national parks (camping permit required). A glamping site is due to open in July 2024.
