Founded in 1478, at the beginning of the Conquest by the conquistador Juan Rejó, the city owes its name to the numerous palm trees that grew at the northeastern tip. Capital of the island and of the province that includes Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and La Graciosa, it is the largest city in the Canaries. It extends in length for nearly 15 kilometers, mainly on the east side. It is articulated between the northern district that follows the Paseo de Las Canteras, the small bay that surrounds its port. Built in the nineteenth century, this Puerto de la Luz is now a commercial, fishing and recreational port and the first port of the archipelago. Its historical neighborhoods are Triana and Vegueta, with Ciudad Jardin serving as an in-between with the port. The main monuments are located in the old town, around the Plaza Santa Ana. After enjoying the charm of its large urban beach, which runs along the Paseo de Las Canteras, you should take the time to discover Triana and then Vegueta, which have hidden courtyards and magnificent colonial buildings, such as the Casa Colón where Christopher Columbus stayed during his first voyage to the Americas, and which can be enjoyed in shady, restful streets and lively plazas. But to visit the Aquarium, you have to go back to the port.
