Petit Futé's opinion on TROJA CASTLE (ZÁMEK TROJA)

Vintage plate 2020

A good idea for an excursion in the immediate vicinity of the city centre for those who will not have the chance to go further into the territory of the Bohemian castles. But far from being a "consolation prize", Troja Castle is worth a trip in its own right. This baroque castle is dominated by a hill covered with vines (topped by a pretty little white chapel) and has a Vltava-style facade. It was built for the Šternberk family by the French architect Jean-Baptiste Mathey at the end of the 17th century to flatter the Habsburgs (who claimed to be descendants of the Trojan kings, hence the name of the castle). The axis of the composition, chosen in such a way that the palace was facing Prague Castle, forced the architect to find many tricks to harmonize the different spaces - castle, stables, gardens and orchard - as well as possible. He was inspired by many of the Italian works he had just studied, which is well reflected in the visitor's impression of entering a Roman villa. In August 2002, the castle and gardens were severely damaged by the floods. Gardens and works of art have suffered. But today, it has been superbly renovated and visiting it is a real pleasure. In each room, explanatory sheets are available in French. It should be noted that the castle is managed by the Prague City Gallery. After the visit, it is still a pure pleasure to walk through the garden and its vineyards.
