26 km from the capital, it was here, off this small fishing village guarded by a 16th-century Venetian fort, that some of the Parthenon friezes were lost on their journey to England in 1802. On the pink sandy beach, two taverns now stand guard, including the highly recommended Sotiris. Right next door is the ancient Cretan settlement of Paleopolis. This archaeological site is believed to have housed a temple dedicated to Aphrodite. Historians are still searching... You can also swim in Diakofti (4 km), the island's second port. From the top of the Agha Moni monastery, you have a bird's-eye view of the charming port of Diakofti.
