Pont-du-Château stretches out on a limestone plateau overlooking the left bank of the Allier. An ancient port city, the fortified city is built on a strategic place, frequented since the Neolithic period, where the river becomes navigable. It was the main port of Clermont-Ferrand, where coal, wood, wine and the famous Volvic stone were transported. Pont-du-Château was a very active port until the 19th century. A visit to the museum of the Batellerie allows to discover its history. The old center, well restored and developed, is worth a walk. It shelters beautiful half-timbered and corbelled houses.
