The port of Gialos and the old town of Horio, on the heights, are connected by the 500 or so steps of Kali Strata, a bourgeois street that winds its way up the hill. One thus passes from the imposing neo-classical villas, two or three storeys high and in the warm and cheerful colours of Gialos, to the cubic and whitewashed houses, many of them in ruins and abandoned, of Horio. Visit the houses of these two villages to admire the interior woodwork that decorates them: since 1971 they have been classified as historical monuments. Looking towards Horio from the port, many churches seem to be embedded in the hill. At the top of the town dominates the Fort of the Knights, built on the ruins of the ancient acropolis
