40 km from Rhodes town, it is the port of the villages of Malona and Massari. On a rocky outcrop, the medieval fortress of Feraklos dominates the sea. Built on the site of an ancient acropolis by the Knights of St. John in the 14th century, it became a strategic stronghold to repel Ottoman attacks. Today, only the fortifications remain. The climb up to the castle is tough: bring water and sun protection. Nearby, a multitude of coves are well worth a visit. Such is the case of the charming sandy bay of Agathi, which offers a superb view over the fortress. Regular bus service from Rhodes city.
