Welcome to Santorini! Thira is the island's tourist hub. The small streets are overflowing with stores with inscriptions in every language, fast-food outlets, hotels and tavernas. The whole thing lacks a little charm, but the view is magnificent. The capital is the place to stay if you want to get around the island, especially without a car. But it's a bit expensive and very touristy. In high season, the crowds, the heat, the hustle and bustle and the welcome are not always pleasant. If you're arriving by boat, please note that Athinios, Santorini's port, is located below Thira. The winding road is sometimes blocked by buses. There is a bus connection, but it's best to plan well in advance.
