Situated in a fertile valley, this area was one of the first on the island to be populated, as witnessed by the Bronze Age necropolis discovered nearby in 1961 and the Temple of Demeter, a model of the Parthenon in Athens. Today, this is the soul of "real Naxos", with its medieval architecture, olive groves, potato fields, abandoned windmills, Venetian towers, small Byzantine churches, monasteries and the ruins of Aparilou Castle, whose capture in 1207 by Marco Sanudo marked the end of the Byzantine period. The village has a tavern, Johnny's, which is honest but open every day.
