5.5 kilometres south-east of Adamas, Zefyria was the medieval capital of the island. The small town developed in the 15th century thanks to the commercial activities of pirates, but in the 18th century the severe damage caused by an earthquake in 1738 and the dangerous gases escaping from the cracks in the earth forced its inhabitants to abandon it and relocate to the kastro (Plaka). Even today, Zefyria is still mostly rural, but you will find a tavern, which is very good by the way, and some rooms for rent. Panaghia Portaitissa (17th century) is particularly interesting, but its icons have been transferred to the Koimissis tis Theotokou church in Adamas.
