Site in Merichas with remains of wall, temples and cisterns to collect water.

This is the centre of the ancient capital of Kythnos: a great city probably founded at the end of the5th century BC on the site of a much older city, which extended as far as the islet of Aghios Loukas. Today, it is mainly admired for the remains of an impressive wall, cisterns to collect water and temples perhaps dedicated to Demeter, the goddess of agriculture. Recent excavations have uncovered other temples. However, archaeological work continues to determine their use.
