In the 7th century, Calmin, descendant of a Roman senatorial family, Count of Auvergne and Duke of Aquitaine, founded a monastery here. The relics of Saint Calmin and Saint Austremoine, the first bishop of Auvergne, made Mozac an important pilgrimage center in the 9th century. Joining Cluny in 1095 brought prosperity to the abbey and the town. The last monks were expelled during the French Revolution. The installation of a Volvic lava enameling factory in 1882 made Mozac the world cradle of enamelled lava. A craftsman's workshop perpetuates this activity and produces, among other things, orientation tables: worth a visit.
