Mavrommati is home to the Ancient Messène. Its historical importance is not negligible since it is the capital of Messinia of Epaminondas. In the eighth century B.C., the Spartans started the first Messenian War, which was followed by two more when the Mesenians tried to liberate themselves by force from the Spartan yoke. After the defeat of Sparta at Leuktius (against Thebes), Epaminondas, the new king of Messinia, calls all the Mesenians back to build this new capital which will serve, with Argos, Megalopolis and Mantinea, to contain Spartan ambitions. In the 4th century, the Goths destroyed the city without any further trial.
