Eighty-six kilometres from Nafplio and 85 kilometres from Sparta, before you reach Leonidion, in the south of Arcadia, the mountains grow as the road descends towards the sea. Leonidion is then in front of you, like a city of the Far-West, surrounded by gigantic red mountains which give it a particular charm. It is worth the passage, even the detour. In 1949, during the civil war, the royalist Leonidians won against the communists and they are proud of it. This village, with its five churches, has kept its traditional habitat. The high patrician houses with their aristocratic appearance, surrounded by courtyards and fragrant gardens, bear witness to this. The weather is warm or mild most of the year. The majority of the tourists who visit Leonidion and its surroundings are Greek. To convince yourself that there is no lack of anything, you only have to walk a few kilometers in the plain, a huge and well-ordered vegetable garden where farmers methodically grow their vegetables, and where oranges, olives and lemons are everywhere; you only have to bend down, so to speak... The beach is 3 km away from the village. The fishing villages to the south of Leonidion (Plaka and Poulithra) or those to the north (Livadi, Sambatiki) have everything to please. Leonidion is also known as the village of the poet Kostas Ouranis (1890-1953) who had his house there.
