OLD CITY OF NAFPLION
City lined with neoclassical houses of the nineteenth century and home to the church of Saint Spiridon in Nafplio.
The old town is full of points of interest. Syntagma Square is the heart of the city, lined with neoclassical houses of the nineteenth century. In a corner of the square is the Vouleftiko mosque which has a beautiful pink facade. It housed the first parliament of Greece liberated in 1825, Nafplio was, before Athens, capital of Greece. Going down from the square towards the sea, we reach Ipsilandou Street where the Museum of Popular Art, created in 1974, is located. Here you can discover traditional costumes of the region as well as objects from the 19th century that belonged to the city's bourgeoisie. More interesting and at least as typical is the Komboloi Museum. It can be reached from Syntagma Square by walking up to the old town and is located in the street just behind it, Staikopoulou Street. More than 400 rosaries are on display, some in semi-precious stones such as amber. Open during the tourist season, the Komboloi Museum has a store on the first floor. It is the occasion to buy a komboloi and to understand finally what it is used for and how it works! Around Staikopoulou Street, get lost in the alleys lined with elegant buildings with balconies and scented by bougainvillea in the summer. You can stop by the church of Saint Spiridon on Kokkinou Street, where Capodistria, the first governor of independent Greece, was murdered by dissidents. Don't forget to make a detour to the church of Panagitsa.
Les héros de l'indépendance, les traces de l'occupation turque. Un vrai supplément d'âme qui fait la richesse de Nauplie.
