8 km north of Dubrovnik, Zaton lies in a pretty 2 km bay, surrounded by the high mountains of the hinterland. The town is divided into two villages on either side of the bay, Veliki and Mali Zaton, linked by a footpath. The local population makes its living from fishing, agriculture (especially olive growing) and tourism. Veliki and Mali Zaton are popular holiday resorts for Dubrovnik's inhabitants. There are numerous seaside villas built by the region's leading families, as well as a small campsite, beach and bathing rocks.
