Ston is linked to Mali Ston by a line of fortified walls (5.5 km), built in the 14th century. Today, a summer running marathon is held here. Known for its elegant historic center, its right-angled streets, its rector's palace and its ashlar houses, it is also famous for its salt marshes, from which the best salt in the country is extracted. A renowned food and wine destination, it is proud of its Slow Food Kinookus festival in September, with its craft market, meetings and public tastings offered by organic producers, winemakers, oyster farmers and restaurateurs.
