About twenty kilometers south of Herment, on the borders of the Puy-de-Dôme and the Corrèze, Messeix (about 1,000 inhabitants) is a peaceful and welcoming place, surrounded by valleys where the Dordogne, Clidane and Chavanon flow. For centuries, thousands of miners have extracted in this corner of the high Combrailles a high quality coal: anthracite. The mine had the particularity of being equipped with electric locomotives. Today it is no longer in use, but houses a museum that bears witness to this strong mining past: the Minérail. Also interesting is the museum of the rural school of Auvergne, which allows the youngest to discover the school of yesteryear.
