On the far western side of the island, the port town of Vela Luka lacks the charm of Korčula but is still an interesting beach destination. There are no beaches nearby, so you have to go around the bay and head to Hotel Posejdon - the nearest one - to find pontoons or push the walk along the rock-lined coastal path. The beaches are outside the city, where the big hotels are located. You can also take a water cab to the uninhabited island of Proizd and discover its beautiful white pebble beaches. Also worth a visit is the archaeological site of Vela špilja (the Great Cave), just above Vela Luka.
