Surrounded by the mighty Dinara Mountains, the high Croatian peaks that rise to 1,913 m, and fed by the waters of lakes and rivers, the town is guarded by a medieval fortress. It is one of the largest and best preserved in the country. It was ruled by four Croatian kings a thousand years ago. At the crossroads of several borders, including that with Bosnia, the town became one of the strategic centres of Croatian power in the Middle Ages. The last war hit Knin and its region hard. Today, from the famous stronghold, you can no longer watch for enemies to arrive, but you can admire the splendid panoramic view.
