Standing 300 m above sea level, this municipality in the Dalmatian lands had a strategic position for the Ottomans. They built a stronghold on this site in the 16th century. From that time, Drniš has kept its spectacular Gradina citadel which stands on the cliff above the canyon of the Cikola River. Here and there are traces of the Turkish occupation, notably on the church of St. Anthony, which in turn became a mosque and then, after the demolition of the minaret, was converted into a place of Christian worship. Good to know: it is in the region of Drniš that one finds the best smoked ham(pršut) of the country!
