Murter has developed around a bay protected from the wind. In recent years, the port has successfully turned to responsible water tourism. Since Tisno has become a destination for festival clubbers, Murter retains its maritime vocation. Boaters prepare to set sail for the Kornati National Park, often pushing towards the Zadar archipelago in the north, the Kvarner Gulf in the north, and in the south towards the Šibenik and Split archipelagos or Dubrovnik. Excursionists also offer day trips to the national park on large private boats, which are equipped for groups. The fishing harbor, so close to the Kornati Marine Park, is a very active nautical base and a meeting place for divers. All of them are preparing for or returning from the sea and enjoy spending time on land in Murter. A traditional boat regatta, known as Latinsko Idro (Latin Regatta), is held every year (end of September) on the day of St. Michael, the patron saint of the town, while on the hill of Vršina, the church of St. Roch, which dates from 1760, hosts a procession (Murter Procesija Sv. Roka). East of the marina Hramina, past the church of Our Lady of Gradina (18th century), an easy hike leaves the coastline and climbs the hill to the archaeological site of Colentum. Here archaeologists have uncovered pavements that attest to the organized presence of the Liburnians as early as the 11th century B.C. and later to the Slavic tribes.
