Preko, the main port , is dominated by a 13th-century fortress built by the Venetians. Lined with beautiful old buildings, but increasingly overrun by concrete, the town has become a major seaside resort. Peaceful strolls lead to Poljana, Sutomišciča, Lukoran and Uglan-Centar or southeast to Kali. On the islet of Galovac, just opposite, stands a 15th-century Franciscan monastery. The archipelago's largest settlement ,Kali has preserved its traditions linked to the sea. Its fishermen were once known as the best in the Adriatic, skilled in the hunt for tuna. On-site sports and beach activities, musical evenings, beach bars, clubs and restaurants. At the end of the harbor, in the northeast of the island, Ugljan-Centar preserves the Franciscan monastery of Sveti Jerolim (1430), which is the repository of an epitaph to Šimun Kožičić-Benja (1460-1536), the primate of Rijeka who had the first book printed in Glagolitic.
