The national park covers 95 km2. Its peak (Vaganski vrh) is 1 757 m above sea level. High altitude torrents have created impressive canyons here, which have become the most famous climbing spots in Europe, with numerous sites. Climbing starts in spring and ends in late autumn with a peak around May1st. The annual mountaineers' meetings and the Big Wall Speed Climbing competition bring together peak hunters from around the world. Kayak and rafting enthusiasts turn to Novigrad or Obravac to descend the currents of the Zrmanja River.
