Founded under the Roman Empire, the island's main town is typical of historic island ports, with an ancient and, above all, medieval, Renaissance and Baroque heritage. These include the imposing Frankopan castle-fortress, with its towers and surrounding walls overlooking the sea. Then there's the cathedral, the campanile, the seafront promenade and the urban fabric built over five centuries of Venetian domination.Today, the city is very open to seaside and nautical tourism. There are numerous cafés-restaurants, swimming facilities, beaches and sea excursions, as well as festive and cultural events.
