Located a few kilometers east of Opatija, Rijeka is one of the few cities on the coast that looks out to sea (major port of the country) but that does not live only from tourism. Its large central square, its cathedral, its castle, its Austro-Hungarian villas, its bourgeois buildings, its market, its carnival, all this heritage surprises the visitor. As for sports, in 2008, the city hosted the European swimming championships in the small pool and, in 2012, the world championships of sea rowing clubs. If the Grobnik motorcycle circuit did not convince, it is soccer that impresses today with a good team named Rijeka.
