Situated on the left bank of theAllier and crossed by the Morge andAndou rivers, Maringues developed a flourishing commercial activity, mainly in tanning. The old disused buildings, with their stilts, balconies and drying sheds, are the only remaining reminders of this great era. The streets are lined with fine 15th and 16th century mansions in wood or stone, including the Hôtel de Bouillon in the Grand-Rue. The town hall occupies the former Ursuline convent. The church has preserved its chevet, choir and carved capitals featuring traditional Auvergne themes: centaurs, roped monkeys, miser, evangelists... almost intact
