We know the impact of plastic in the world's seas. In the Indian Ocean, there has long been an awareness of it and more and more tourism stakeholders are committed to eliminating its use as much as possible and finding alternatives (bamboo straws, use of natural materials for construction or hotel equipment, etc.). For bottled water, it is more complicated, especially when it cannot be recycled on site. The Princess Bora Lodge & Spa on Sainte-Marie Island is designed to be plastic-free. It produces its own water that is bottled in glass bottles. The bottles are imported but the water is produced locally. Drawn from a spring in the hotel, it goes through a whole process of filtration, UV, decantation and mineralization to be able to be consumed healthily (the quality of the water is regularly controlled by the Pasteur Institute). Part of the profits from the sale of the bottles is donated to the Anjaranay association for the Rano Madio operation (drinking water) in the schools of Sainte-Marie. A fine example of an eco-responsible project!
