Only 47 km south of Trabzon, the monastery is a marvel that took its present form in the 13th century, during the reign of the Commenes. At an altitude of 1,200 meters above the Altındere Valley (national park), it literally clings to the mountain amidst a backdrop of magnificent trees and greenery. According to local legends, the monastery was founded in 386 by two Athenian priests, Barnabas and Sophronius. They found an icon of the Virgin Mary in a cave on the mountain and decided to stay and establish a monastery. A restaurant for tea is located at the entrance.
